Treatment of Gallstone

Most people with gallstones have no symptoms. In fact, they are usually unaware that they have gallstones unless symptoms occur. These are called silent gallstones. Symptoms usually occur as complications develop. The most common symptom is a pain in the right upper part of the abdomen. Because the pain comes in episodes, it is often referred to as an attack.

  • Attacks may occur every few days, weeks, or months; they may even be separated by years.
  • The pain usually starts within 30 minutes after a fatty or greasy meal. The pain is usually severe, dull, and constant, and can last from one to five hours. It may radiate to the right shoulder or back.
  • It occurs frequently at night and may awaken the person from sleep.
  • The pain may make the person want to move around to seek relief, but many patients prefer to lay still and wait for the attack to subside.
After evaluation of the patient, usually Abdominal sonography along with some blood investigations are suggested. Sonography will confirm the diagnosis. If required your doctor may suggest some advanced investigations. After all investigations, a further plan is decided.

A cholecystectomy is a surgical procedure to remove your gallbladder. The gallbladder is a pear-shaped organ that sits just below your liver on the upper right side of your abdomen. Your gallbladder collects and stores bile. Bile is a digestive fluid produced in your liver.

Most people fit the criteria for laparoscopic surgery. However, not everyone is the right candidate for this technique of surgery. The decision depends on various factors like age, the general condition of the body, associated diseases that the patient may have, previous surgical history, and more factors. The decision is made after a clinical assessment of the patient and reviewing some investigations.
  • Surgery is done under general anesthesia. So you will not experience any pain or discomfort during surgery. Ideally, a hospital stay of at least 24 hrs is required. After the surgery, you will be under observation and necessary medicines will be given to you to make the pain minimal.
  • Once everything is fine for 24hrs you will be started with diet gradually and explained in detail what to expect at home after discharge.
Most people can return to their normal activities in 7 to 10 days. People who have laparoscopic gallbladder surgery are sore for about a week. But in 2 to 3 weeks they have much less discomfort than people who have open surgery.

The most common sign of a gallbladder attack is pain in the upper right abdomen, just under the rib cage. Pain may also be felt in the upper center of the belly, or in the lower chest.

Other symptoms of a gallbladder attach include:

  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Pain in the right shoulder or back
  • Fever or chills
  • Yellowish skin or eyes (jaundice)
  • Tea-colored urine and light-colored stools

See a doctor if you experience symptoms of a gallbladder attack.

Gallstones themselves are not usually serious. In most cases people have no symptoms. But in rare cases they can result in serious problems, such as:

  • Gallbladder infection
  • Inflammation of the pancreas
  • Jaundice (yellowish skin and eyes)
  • Blockage of the bile ducts and liver
  • Tears in the gallbladder, which can be fatal

This is a painless test that uses high-frequency sound waves to create an image of the gallbladder and to see if stones are present.

However, since gallstones often do not cause symptoms, it is possible symptoms may be a result of another condition and a doctor may order other tests to determine the cause of your symptoms.

If stones are small enough, they may exit the gallbladder and pass through the bile ducts, into the intestine, where they are then excreted in your stool.

When gallstones become stuck in the gallbladder or bile ducts they can cause pain, obstructions, and infections.

  • Fruits and vegetables
  • Beans
  • Whole grains
  • Healthy fats (such as fish oil and olive oil)

Dr. Abhijit Gotkhinde sir operated my father for piles using a laser technique. Initially, we were quite anxious but after discussing with him about the procedure we felt confident. Surgery was done in less than 30 min & it was absolutely pain-free. He recovered in a single day. Within 1 week he is ready to work. Now we are thinking we would have done the procedure prior only. I must say, Dr. Gotkhinde is the best laser surgeon for piles.
